this is not as good as a Spa, but for the price & convenience, I like it. It is rigid but once you get seated on it, it is comfortable. I have a textured bottom tub so of course the suction cups do not stick. I run a few inches of water in the tub, add my Dead Sea Salts, and get in & finish filling it up. Don’t turn it on until you get in & finish filling the tub. If you do not have one of the deeper, bigger tubs then I’d suggest getting one of the overflow drain covers so you can fill the tub up some more. It makes taking a bath a lot more enjoyable & after a hard day at work, it soothes all of my aches & pains. It has a lot of bubble action. I hope this helps anyone, I would recommend this.

Home improvement spending is expected to improve in 2012, as the economy gets better and the housing market shows signs of recovery, according to a measure from the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University.

“Sales of existing homes have been increasing in recent months, offering more opportunities for home improvement projects,” said Kermit Baker, director of the Remodeling Futures Program, in a news release.

The program’s Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity shows remodeling spending on course to hit an annual pace of $113.6 billion spent by the third quarter of 2012. The expected increase in spending is partly due to encouraging data on the housing market.

“As lending institutions become less fearful of the real estate sector, financing will become more readily available to owners looking to undertake remodeling,” Baker said.

New construction of U.S. houses retreated in December, putting an end to a year in which builders broke ground on a record-low number of single-family homes, the Commerce Department estimated Thursday.

Home sales continue to improve

Home sales ended a difficult year on a high note, resulting in a gain in full-year sales volume.

The National Association of Realtors reported that the annual sales pace in December reached 4.6 million homes, up 5% from November’s pace and 3.6% from a year ago.

It was the third straight month of improvement in the pace of sales. The fourth-quarter sales volume lifted full-year sales to 4.26 million homes, up 1.7% from 2010 levels.

“The pattern of home sales in recent months demonstrates a market in recovery,” said Lawrence Yun, the group’s chief economist. “Record low mortgage interest rates, job growth and bargain home prices are giving more consumers the confidence they need to enter the market.”

Home prices, however, remained depressed, largely because distressed sales continue to make up a significant part of the market.

The median price was $164,500 in December, down 2.5% from a year ago. For the full year, the median price of $166,100 was off 3.9% from 2010 levels.

Realtors said foreclosed homes sold for an average discount of 22% below market value in December, compared to a 20% discount a year ago. Meanwhile, short sales, which are homes sold for less than the amount owed on a mortgage, sold for a 13% discount, compared to a 16% discount in December 2010.

Foreclosures made up 21% of all sales, while short sales were 12%. Both figures were comparable to 2010.

But even with the distressed properties on the market, the inventory of homes for sale has gotten tight.

Realtors calculate that at the current sales pace, there is only a 6.2 month supply of homes available for sale, the smallest since March 2005, before the housing bubble burst.

That was down from a 7.2-month supply in November and more than an 8-month supply a year ago, which is a “a notable decline,” according to Troy Davig, an economist with Barclays Capital.

“The housing market appears to be making progress in terms of working through its excess inventory,” said Davig in a note Friday.

Joseph LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist for Deutsche Bank, said the current conditions should lead to improved prices and sales in the near term.

Other encouraging signs include a survey of home builders that showed the most bullish view of current sales conditions and customer traffic in nearly five years. The government’s report on home building is also showing improvement.

“Coming on the back of a dramatic improvement in homebuilders’ sentiment, the latest existing-home sales report corroborates our thesis that a housing recovery has finally begun,” LaVorgna wrote in a note.

A Thiells home-improvement contractor convicted of ripping off a Nyack homeowner for $5,000 received a five-month jail sentence and a $1,000 fine during an appearance in state Supreme Court in New City.

A jury convicted Jerry Cioffi in October of stealing the money after not fulfilling his contract in April 2010 to construct a sewer line at the Nyack home of his customer. Cioffi never applied for permits and didn’t do any work for the $5,000 down payment on the $10,000 job.

The jury convicted Cioffi, a plumber, and his corporation, Cioffi Services Inc., of one count each of third-degree grand larceny, a felony. The jury deliberated for two hours before returning a guilty verdict in October following the trial.

Justice William A. Kelly also sentenced Cioffi on Wednesday to five years’ probation.

Cioffi repaid the Nyack family the $5,000 down payment before sentencing, the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office said.

District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said Thursday that his office prosecuted Cioffi for grand larceny under the state’s Lien Law. Zugibe’s office has used the law to crack down on fraudulent home improvement and other types of contractors.

The law mandates that contractors can use the money for a home-improvement or property contract only on that specific project and must maintain separate ledgers for each job. By failing to provide an accounting of how the money had been used and by not returning the money upon the demand of the consumer, the contractor violated the law, Zugibe said.

Prosecutors and investigators with the Rockland District Attorney’s Special Investigations Unit and the Rockland Department of Consumer Protection were involved in the investigation.

The charges carried a maximum of seven years in state prison.
